I teach what I've learned so far about landscape and car photography (35+ years), but my sneaky goal underneath it all is to encourage those of us in our mid-years to enjoy our lives more; to live deliberately. After all, life is short, and it's incumbent on each of us to LIVE while we're alive.
MY BACKGROUND
******************
I shot and wrote for motoring magazines and manufacturers in the '80s & '90s before moving into software. Throughout my varied career, I’ve had many passion projects (including writing a short book, building and running three blogs, and creating a podcast of more than 100 episodes). I also did a long stint as an active property investor before the sh*t hit the fan and I lost everything (except my sense of humour).
Today, I enjoy making videos about things that make me, and hopefully you, happy. Because, back to that old chestnut, life is bloody short! 🦘

Car Photography - The Best Angles to Shoot
One of the most important car photography skills is knowing which angle to shoot from. This video shows you the top five angles I've used since the late '80s, shooting for car magazines, manufacturers, and clients.

Justifying the $8k Hasselblad X2D | Owner Review
Просмотров 42 тыс.Месяц назад
The Hasselblad X2D 100C is a genuine 'grail' camera, and with a price of USD$8,000 for the body alone, it should be. But after using a Canon R5 for the last few years, I found it easy to justify switching to the X2D - and it wasn't the 102 MP sensor that swayed me. I'm writing this 11min into the video--I couldn't wait any longer. Your editing and writing seem to somehow fall right in line with that industrial design your subject holds. The comprehensiveness and simultaneous brevity of this review are a breath of fresh air; head and shoulders above so many gear videos on YT. I'm subscribing with the hopes of enjoying more of the same. Very well done, sir.
@@burnedbytheword I very appreciate that, thank you.
Appreciate your no nonsense, quick and to the point videos.

,,,just starting our car photography journey and we have subscribed! Your background in this photo genre is extensive with a wealth of knowledge that is truly impressive. We feel so fortunate to have 'discovered' your channel and words can't express how grateful we are that you have chosen to share from that vast wealth of shooting experiences.
@@eoslove2022 Thank you - that’s very kind.
...holy shit, this is worse than I thought. You're just a gear-head. I took a chance and watched this yet again hoping against hope that there was something in all this video and all this talk that was rationally, objectively worth listening to and learning. There is not, at least not in the first half. You complain that your gear is soulless. Literally. You just don't like how it looks and works. My God, man. It's a camera. Not a $8k you. Really $100k you said, considering all the lenses, right? This is not a video about photography. This is a video about being rich and able to afford to buy whatever you want to buy. About buying trophy gear. And shooting it proudly and happily. Just to own it and shoot it. Photography for the Rich and Famous. Sorry, man. There is a clear "class distinction" here between you and me. I am all about the shot. Couldn't give a damm about the gear beyond the fact that I can get the shot that I want with it. The only really relevant thing here is your carrying that camera mounted to that 2-foot lens in the boot of your car. Which looks like some kind of tidiculously-expensive sports car. Driving around taking salon shots of expensive cars in the woods. Which explains a lot. This is about the circles that you want to move in to get the shots that your customers want to be seen in. It's all about justifying spending ridiculous gobs of money to get access to even more money. I was wondering how you were going to work that 100MP camera body into this and now I know. You need to produce a lot of high-resolution prints to even get in the door. Probably need them to be technically flawless. And you need something "better" than "Nikon" or "Canon". Clearly not "Sony" either 😊 And now there are so many 100MP bodies on the market. Where's the gloss in that 😊 Ah, the need to look good...no, to look great 😊 to the point where it permeates every aspect of your life 😊😊😊 I guess that I will just have to be happy with my old beat-up D850 and a 30 year old AF-D 28-80 😊 that's been sitting in a bag unused for most of the past 3 years while I shot my cellphone for YT 😊 This made my whole fucking day, honestly
I think your issue here is that you wanted that gear and you had the financial resources to pay for it but you don't really know how to rationalize paying that much money for it or even just buying it in the first place. Because ultimately photography is all subjective. So you come at the problem from a really stupid and elitist angle which essentially is you saying that most viewers of this video simply are not qualified to judge you. Which is a classic logical fallacy. You are not qualified to judge the people watching this video. You don't even know who they are. You only know who you want them to be. Likewise you know what you want the gear that you have bought to be. Your thinking here is that if you spend enough money and buy enough crap then it certainly has to be what you want it to be which is gear that produces "great photos". But the problem is that "great photos" are entirely subjective. It isn't going to be great because of the camera specs and performance. It's going to be because it's a great scene framed and shot well. Good shots are a mark of photographic talent not photography technology. You can't buy talent. You can only demonstrate a desire to have it. Short of that (and after 40 years of shooting you know where you stand in terms of talent) you are reduced to dazzling people with electromechanical parlor-tricks. You're now The Spec Guy. Why don't you just let your photos do the talking, and stop putting your foot in your mouth?
@@touristguy87 Well alrighty then.
@@PETERFRITZPHOTO LOL I humbly have to admit that I wrote all that after watching the first minute of your video. I watched half of it and then I understood where you're coming from. This reminds me of the woman who complained that her wedding photographer, a pro who she was paying to take her wedding photos, showed up with an iphone on a selfie-stick. She thought that she was paying for a pro with professional gear and she was not happy. The gear has to look the part, and as long as you have to have a Hasselblad or some other impressive-looking camera...and you can afford it? Then why not get a good one. I get that. But you could have just said that up front :) Beyond that, I'm not the one paying $100k for my gear, that's you. You have to rationalize it, and for some people they will never get it because it's $100k gear and that's all there is to it. But if you can afford it easily, the price is not the issue. When you've owned, shot and made money with better gear than your audience, then you can kinda tell the people who harsh on you for buying $100k worth of camera gear to go eff themselves. I get it. But again, it would have been better to start with that upfront rather than saying that the people watching the video aren't good enough to judge you. It all depends on your viewers :)
@@PETERFRITZPHOTO btw I just wasted two hours taking handheld shots with a $50 D300s and a $100 Tamron 28-300 non-VC that I got off eBay a couple of years ago, just to see what the shots would look like if I actually took them, of a barn, handheld at 450mm effective, 300 yds away, ISO 300-1600. Shooting raw + jpeg and pp in RawTherapee and Gimp in Ubuntu. Just for my own edification. Absolutely otherwise a complete waste of time. I have a D850 and a D750 sitting on the shelf next to it. Just so you know where I stand on the list of viewers of your Hasselblad video :) There's no effing way that I would ever spend that kind of money on a personal camera (not to mention for a camera that big and expensive), but by the same token NOBODY is ever going to buy one of my shots :) I personally enjoy taking bad shots (well, challenging shots) and trying to fix them in post. For a pro it might make perfect sense to buy and carry that camera and the lenses for it. Not for me! So I have to apologize for coming at the question from a perspective that may have little to nothing to do with your perspective. But I *can* ask you this question. Is it REALLY that much better than a D850? Because you can get D850s for under $1500 on eBay now, and they will shoot almost every Nikon FX and DX lens ever made...and those lenses are filling-up camera-stores all over the world :)
GR86 and BRZ is great cars with a low price, problem is they are new cars which makes them more expensive then baying a old Porsche Cayman with more horsepower...
@@a64738 In some countries, absolutely.
No... But it is a sports car that is fun to drive that is half price of a Porsche :) But many of those that can afford the Porsche say they prefer the Porsche even if it is double the price. But in the comments here I see many Porsche owners saying they prefer the GR86 saying it is more fun at lower speeds.
I agree with you in almost everything. I started with rf 50 1.8, super versatile. Then I bought the rf 24-105 L. It was the perfect companion for travels. Finally I bought the rf 24 70 2.8. Colors and focusing is on another level. I will buy the 70-200 2.8 eventually for portraits. I love canon for its glass and usability of the camera. Think about the dials, joystick and ergonomic of the camera. It hasn’t really changed since the canon 5D which I still have. I love shooting with canon
Honestly all of them sounded passable. The worst was the built in mic. I always struggle to not have my clip on mic connect to my phone, sound crackly. But all of the, after the built in mic sounded good
@@NolanHawkeyeAnthony Ironically, I find these days that the built-in mics on the iPhone 14 Pro are usually the best. In-car dialogue is bloody hard.
@@PETERFRITZPHOTO it really is. The iPhone is definitely really good and perhaps I need to check it out. Thanks for the content
@@PETERFRITZPHOTOhave you been able to try the rode micro 2? It seems in this video you tested the 1st version
@@NolanHawkeyeAnthony This video is pretty old, yeah. I haven’t tried the Micro 2, but I have tried the GO 2. I’ve also used the DJI Mics (1 & 2). At the end of the day, all are at the mercy of the car’s level or sound deadening, the speed you’re travelling at, and the coarseness of the asphalt. Thanks, old boy, and same to you.
But zoom lens helped me a lot to photograph mountains I zoomed in and framed small boxes and then later I stitched like 30 boxes and got a big landscape with great details .
Oh, wow - that sounds cool.
My skill level does not warrant the cost, however, it is something to aspire to.
You’re 100% correct about how the sound of a car affects your feeling about driving it. I bought a BRZ last year and left it mostly stock for the first year so I could gain an appreciation for the car the way it was originally. I only did a few minor cosmetic things, put the sti v-bars in and a k&n filter. But this year I added a new exhaust before I was going on road trip in the mountains and it was definitely worth it. In stock form these cars are almost completely silent other than the fake piped in sound. Well I disconnected that sound and added the exhaust and it’s so much better now. Now it has more of a performance sports car sound and more of that boxer engine noise. It’s still equal length headers but it does still sound different than a typical inline 4 in my opinion. Next year I’m hoping to add wider wheels and tires because I like a more grippy feel and the stock tires are really skinny.
@@briantroxell7874 Sounds like everything I’d do. 👍

Great video and matches my way of working. I use a Leica M10 and M10R for similar reasons. I also have Nikon Z 6 2 & 7 2 and these images are very close to Leica. Thanks, Mauro. I was lucky to get an X2D from George’s in Sydney, whilst all my XCD lenses came from Camera Electronic in Perth.
The S or the GTS is closer to a race car than a sports car because it beats more sports cars on all metrics.
What agreat comparisson of these two cars! Do you feel underpowered in the 981 base Boxster?
@@marcuskrugel6620 Thanks a lot, Marcus! I’ve owned more powerful cars in the past, but the Boxster is definitely powerful enough. A big part of that is probably the glorious sounds it makes. Even just off idle, it sounds ballsy. Plus, my real driving pleasure comes from twisty mountain and coastal roads, and too much power actually ruins that experience. In this regard, the base model is perfect.

I think Tommy has that smile that means he's going to want a boxter when he is 16 lol!
Loved your review! I owe the lot, including the 907, which I use often, but the X2D is truly a gem, have gone a similar path from the Nikormat through the F2’s . Then Leica, now Hasselblad! Using my M Monochrome a lot, but the X2D, with the 35m Lens on mostly for street and so called touristy/location shots, interiors etc, I cannot see myself using anything else at the moment (my medium format prior was my trusted RB67, a tank for still life & food photography at the time) but gosh the X2D is something else! You nailed most of the points, my critique though, getting hold of lenses is a nightmare, mostly on waiting lists, but almost there, service support only if you are lucky to live somewhere where they have such (Singapore a total nightmare) the Covers on the left side, easily to come off (for the charging) flimsy, else it’s a magical tool and am totally happy with the hard ware! (Haven’t really used the adapters for the M & R lenses, Too much to carry around, :-) , keep your reviews coming, your clarity and focus on subject are exceptional! Thank You! 🙏🏻
Thanks for this generous comment, Peter. I certainly agree with you regarding getting access to lenses! I just managed to buy a 35-75 last week, which is exceptional, and it will replace my 45P and 80 1.9. I'd still love to get the 90 2.5 and 55 2.5, but wait times are stupidly long, so my current setup will have to suit for now.
@@PETERFRITZPHOTO Peter, I found a way around the lens issue, at least partially, my 90mn is waiting for me at my brothers home in Berlin, am on a European tour right now! I Signed up for their online store, and once available, and if you are fast enough, then you can actually get one! One caveat though, they only ship within Europe, else B&H worked for my 45mp. But be aware, European delivery includes a 20% or so GST/VAT which in Sweden is stupidly high, and no way to get a refund! So either you have massive patience or you may end up paying double tax! Plus of course you need a European address ! 🤪

Typical day, wake up early, get dressed, kiss my wife, go to work, come home, ride my bike for an hour or so then do it again the next day. Date nights with Katie a few nights a week. Thanks for asking. 😀. I hope you’re doing well.
@@BayouJosh Good to hear, Josh. Relatable, too. My life is very much the same right now, with family and work dominating 95% of my time. Making videos is very much an indulgence, lately.
thankyou for showing us a beautiful camera. that i will never get to use. but i can imagine
Haha - thanks for watching. It took me 56 years to hold, and thankfully, buy, my first Hasselblad.
In the end, for me, it comes down to cost. I can swing a brand new MX-5 but even a used Boxster in my area is significantly more expensive, and a new one is not even something I think about. The MX-5 isn't the best car but she is one hell of a lot of "bang for your buck" for the common man wanting a convertible sports car that isn't too old.
I agree 100%. I was fortunate that I had three cars I could sell for a profit (thanks to crazy COVID used car prices), so the planets aligned for me to scratch this itch. I still look at every MX5 with great affection.
Juat the brand is enough for me :))
Gave my 911 to my brother as I got the GR. Perfect car, no bullshit, no brand praising, no need for high speed, no massive bills doing service or customization, only downside is the sound. GR every day. Cheers from Germany.
Haha! Now that’s something you don’t read every day!
After I edited almost 3k iPhone photos, you say the true - 4:34 Photographers recommend 35mm for the start but I think 35mm should be used as ultra wide lens (20mm and less) because it is still wide angle. Ultra wide lens should be used for buildings, swag portraits (from down perspective) or generally putting some swag into the photo. I've seen tones of photos from POV's videos and 85mm looks cinematic, 50mm is a kind of balance but sometimes it doesn't look natural and don't know why. 120mm starts to become more popular lens. I've seen for example on North Borders channel. Most of his photos on last videos are taken by 100mm~ Bigger mm gives a something mysterious, deep effect, you see the one object that is interesting. I never used true camera but I compare it to zoom in iPhones 1x 24mm 2x 48mm (I call it 50mm) 3x 77mm (85mm) 5x 120mm Photographers say" buy a normal camera". They are right but from my 3k photos I can find maybe 200 or more that really looks like they were taken by 5000$ camera. I noticed the only difference between normal camera and iPhone is: - objects has slightly different look on iPhone (48mm) and camera (50mm). - there is a deep effect - more details on people's faces. That's all from me. Amazing video man!
By far the best X2D review I've seen; clear, concise, and right on point. I'm on X1D II and looking forward to upgrading, this really helped. Thank you.
Thank you - much appreciated.
I've been digging the ULTRA wide angle lenses with cars lately. Especially when they're very crispy and sharp
Interesting. Up close, or from a distance?
The only thing why I would want this over my M11 is the AF.
The M11 is gorgeous.
